The Mukuni Village in Zambia

The Mukuni is a real African Village.  The people live in a communal society and everything is
for the common good.  They grow their own food and everyone makes crafts to sell at the
local market in Victoria Falls as well at their village.

They have a king and a queen (not married) and they both rule together.  All problems are handled
by themselves and they do not involve any outside interference.  This is the Queen's house.

This woman demonstrated for us how to crack a nut with a rock on a rock and then she would
squeeze it to get a few drops of oil.  That is the all-important source of oil for their cooking.  The
nuts grow on the trees in their yard.

This is the kitchen.  All cooking takes place outside of their huts for safety as well as to control
the smoke.

Preparing the vegetables for the evening meal.  Their diet is mostly vegetables, fruit, and beans.
They eat very little meat and that is mostly for celebrations (weddings and funerals.)

This is fruit drying on these large rock slabs.

Suddenly a large group of people came through the courtyard area.  It was the funeral of a
very old gentleman.

The ladies at the back were wailing and sobbing.

This is the community jail house.  Their biggest problem is someone stealing from someone else.
For punishment, they are put into this jail for a number of days and they are humiliated and
embarrassed.  Then they are required to do a number of days of community service.  It seems
to be a good way to handle the problem of stealing--our guide said they didn't really have much
of a problem with any kind of crime in the village.

Grandpa is shopping and bargaining--he loves to do this.  We bought some beautiful handmade
bowls and salad spoons.  This market is within walking distance from our hotel.

As I was walking along the path to the shopping area,
2 young men motioned to me to move away from the
sidewalk and come to them.  I asked what is the problem
and they answered, "There is a cobra right there!"
I could see it then, camouflaged in the weeds not 3 feet
from where I was.  I prefer to learn about snakes, not
see them beside me.
